About Us Information

  • 1976 - A little company called Expandor, Inc. opened for business, selling connectivity devices -the little black boxes -that clients need to connect their primary data communications products.
  • 1977 - the first BLACK BOX Catalog rolled off the presses. It was six pages, contained nine products and generated $170,000 in sales.
  • 1982 - Changed the name to Black Box since majority of customers began calling the company by its catalog name.
  • 1994 - Black Box goes online and within the first two weeks, visitors from 36 companies found the site.
  • 1994 - The company's size, plans for growth and financial stability prompted Black Box to go public.
  • 1998 - Black Box first offers on-site data network infrastructure services in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Later that year, Black Box expanded its on-site offerings to Florida. Currently, Black Box offers data and voice services in 141 countries.
  • 1999 - The number of talented employees at Black Box hits 1,000.
  • 1999 - Black Box begins offering network infrastructure services in the United Kingdom. Today, Black Box offers data and voice services in 141countries.
  • 1999 - Black Box is named one of the "200 Best Small Companies in America" by Forbes magazine.
  • 1999 - A new state-of-the-art distribution center opens in Lawrence, PA.
  • 2000 - Black Box expands its on-site capabilities to include telephony as well as data infrastructure services. Services are also offered throughout Europe and in the Pacific Rim.
  • 2001 - The BLACK BOX CATALOG® grows to 1488 pages.
  • 2002 - BusinessWeek magazine recognizes Black Box as one of the "Best 100 Small Companies."
  • 2002 - An Internet-based project tracking system called e-Status is launched.
  • 2003 - The number of Black Box team members tops 3000.
  • 2004 - The BLACK BOX CATALOG® wins the Multichannel Merchant Catalog of the Year award for the first time, and top honors in the Computer Equipment category for the ninth consecutive year. Both honors were repeated in 2005. 
  • 2005 - Black Box greatly expands its voice services with the acquisition of Minnesota-based Norstan, Inc.

The Present

  • Today, Black Box has become the leading worldwide provider of network infrastructure services and products. From its headquarters in scenic Lawrence, Pennsylvania, 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, Black Box services 141 countries.

The Future 

  • Black Box plans to stay focused on its founder's original vision: to create a "central, reliable source for hard-to-find products and technical skill." The products and services will continue to expand yet one thing will never change - the Black Box commitment to superior tech support.
